How to: stay healthy during the holidays

Christmas-SliderThere are a million reasons why Christmastime is the most wonderful time of the year. But, oftentimes, we forget about the beauty and happiness during the season and are left unhappy, unhealthy and stressed. Here are my five tips to have a healthy holiday season.

Stay active: Make sure you’re working out at least 30 minutes each day during this time of year in addition to daily shopping trips, mall walking, etc. Or, join a holiday race of 5k to stay active during the holidays. You can stay active while making a difference.

Make healthier recipes: You don’t have to eat heavy, holiday food from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve. Find healthy recipes that your family and friends will enjoy in addition to mashed potatoes and stuffing. You’ll thank yourself when Jan. 1 rolls around.

Use a smaller plate: If you’re working on eating consciously, try eating meals on a smaller plate. This will give the illusion that you’re eating more when you’re actually eating proper portions. On Thanksgiving and Christmas day, you can put away the plate as a reward for your hard work in between holidays.

Say no: Not only does holiday health include fitness and food, but also mental and emotional health. Holidays are a time of giving, but don’t give up all of your spare time. You’ll be stressed during the happiest time of he year. Say no and give yourself a break. You deserve it.

Embrace the holiday season: Walk outside in the snow, spend an extra day with your family watching movies, bake cookies, give a gift to a stranger. Embrace the elements Christmas brings each year. There’s a reason why it’s the most wonderful time of the year, so make it wonderful.

Holiday dresses under $40

HolidayDressesFrom left to right: dresses from ASOS (red), Soho Girl (gold) and Charlotte Russe (black)

With the holiday season approaching, it’s important to find outfits to wear that won’t break your bank. With a list of people you need to shop for, spending extra money on yourself isn’t probable. But you shouldn’t sacrifice your appearance to save money. The three dress, pictured above, are all under $40, which is perfect if you’re looking to save extra money this season.

I love holiday clothes for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. The festive colors and patterns can really put someone in the holiday spirit. My three go-to colors for holiday dresses are: red, gold and black. What’s great about these three choices is that you can easily incorporate them in your wardrobe throughout the year. It’s important to choose dresses that are both versatile and inexpensive.

A red dress immediately makes me think of Christmastime and the beauty that comes with the time of year. If you’re looking for a bold-colored dress, red is the perfect pick for you.

Gold is an underrated color for the holidays, but I think it’s perfect, especially for New Year’s Eve. What better way to ring in 2015 than a gold, sequin dress.

If you love a traditional, classic look, a little black dress is great for you. This is a great option for Thanksgiving. You probably already have one in your closet, which means less money to spend.

How To: Apply makeup if you wear glasses

Tailoring your makeup to complement your glasses can be tricky. You want to have your makeup stand out but not look too dramatic during the day. How do you find a happy medium? I have five tips on what you should focus on if you wear glasses on a regular basis.

Highlight your eyebrows: When you wear glasses, eyebrows are very important because they frame your face. Ability to properly regulate and fill-in your eyebrows can change the look of your face. Make sure to define them without applying too much.

Stick to neutral colors: Less is more for those who wear glasses. It’s best to keep eye makeup simple by applying neutral shades. To emphasize your eyes, apply a darker shade in the crease and blend it out.

Tailor your liner to your frames: When applying eyeliner, consider the shape of your glasses and lenses. Some lenses, for example, are magnifying, which will make whatever eye makeup you choose (including mistakes) even more visible. Eyeliner can be noticeable but subtle.

Brighten your lips: Wear a  bright, bold color on your lips. This will add more drama to your overall makeup look. A bold color will help enhance and complement your glasses.

Add color and definition to your cheeks: Apply a pink blush to the apple of your cheeks. This will add color to a face. Make sure to contour your face as well. Accentuating your high points helps to draw attention away from your glasses. Apply your go-to bronzing powder along your cheekbones.

We all have those days where we feel sluggish, tired and dreadful of the day ahead, but it certainly doesn’t have to be this way. It’s important to always take care of your body, mind and spirit to have a good day. I created a list of the top eight ways to have a healthy, happy day.

I’m always looking for tips and tricks on how to live a healthier lifestyle, so if you have any ideas that aren’t listed, make sure to leave them in the comments below or tweet me @BlissBrunette.

1. Drink green tea to boost your metabolism.  This will cleanse your body of toxins before you begin the day.

2. Set your alarm an hour earlier to squeeze in a morning workout. Studies show an increase in happiness and overall productivity for those who workout in the morning.

3. Drink two glasses of water when you wake up; bonus points if you drink warm water fresh lemon. If you don’t like tea, this is a great alternative for a metabolism boost.

4. Complete a five-minute yoga sequence to relieve anxiety before work. You’ll find a decrease in stress and an increase in your overall mood.

5. Sip on a glass of wine at night to reduce heart problems and stress. This is a great way to treat yourself at the end of the day.

6. Take the time to enjoy each meal. Eating too quickly can stop you from realizing when you’re full. Eat slowly to help with digestion.

7. Pack healthy snacks the night before work or school, so you don’t give in to junk-food cravings. Planning and preparing meals will lead to less stress in the morning and a better diet.

8. Find time to meditate — it will help you focus and relax at the end of a long day. Meditation is beneficial for the mind, body and spirit.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend and I will talk to you on Monday!

Four mascara mistakes you’re making

Mascara is the number one product I need to apply every day. I can live without foundation and eyeliner, but mascara is a necessity. Even though applying mascara is a task you do every day, you might be making some mistakes when applying mascara.

The brush has too much product: When you pull the wand out of the tube to apply mascara, it’s important to clean off the excess product. Piling on too much product at once always leads to clumps.

You’re Using Too Much: Two coats of mascara is the amount you need. Any more coats will likely result in clumps. You can use a mascara comb to separate lashes.

Using Expired Products: After three months, you should change your mascara. Bacteria grows on the wand and inside the tube, which can lead to irritated eyes. Even if you’ve only used the mascara once or twice, the three-month rule still applies.

Pumping the Wand: You add air to your mascara when you pump the wand in and out of the tube to get more product. This dries out the mascara and causes it to clump. You should dip the wand in once. if it’s not enough mascara, you’ve probably run out.

Are you guilty of some of these mistakes? I know I am! But at least they’re easy fixes to make sure you get the most out of your mascara. Do you have any tips on applying mascara? Make sure to leave them in the comments below or tweet me your tips to @BlissBrunette on Twitter!

I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and I will talk to you on Wednesday.

Sleep: Why it’s important and how to sleep better

insomniaOne of the most overlooked aspects of health is sleep. Most people would sacrifice a good night of sleep to get more work done or to spend time with friends and family. However, you may not know that sleep is important for your overall health. For you night owls, here are some of the problems you might have from sleepless nights.

1. Weight Gain: Have you noticed that you feel sluggish, bloated or heavier? Your sleep schedule could be the blame.

2. Weak Immune System: Your overall health suffers from lack of sleep. If you find that you have the common cold more than three times a year, try to get some extra Zs.

3. Moodiness: This is obvious. Less sleep means less patience. Regular sleep will make you happier and healthier altogether.

4. Ages Skin: Your skin will suffer from acne, redness and puffiness without a proper night of rest. Always aim for eight or more hours each night.

5. Memory Problems: Struggling in school or at work? Lack of sleep might be to blame for poor memory or less ambition.

Fear not! You can easily get a better night’s rest with a few tips. Here are my top five:

1. Exercise regularly: People who work out regularly are more likely to have a consistent sleep schedule.

2. Stick to a schedule: It takes seven days to adjust to a sleeping pattern. Try to fall asleep by 11 p.m. every night for best results.

3. Avoid eating before bed: Your heart rates increases while digesting food, making it more difficult to sleep. Don’t eat at least two hours prior to falling asleep.

4. Avoid daytime naps: Any nap longer than 20 minutes will make your sleep schedule suffer. The best “power nap” time is 15 to 20 minutes.

5. Watch the temperature:  65 to 70 degrees is the body’s ideal sleeping condition. Any warmer can disturb sleep.

Do you suffer from proper sleep? If not, what are your tips for getting a good night’s rest? Make sure to leave them in the comments below or tweet them to me @BlissBrunette. I hope you all enjoy your weekend and I will talk to you on Monday.

October Favorites 2014

B1hVDrbIAAApcBvIs anyone else overwhelmed that there are only two months left in 2014? As much as I love the holidays and this time of year, I can’t wrap my head around this year coming to an end. Like this post if you’re excited for the holidays to begin!

I’m happy to share four new products and one old favorite that I have been loving this month, so let’s get started.

Estēe Lauder pure color lipstick: I love this color for the season (color Rubellite #188). Estēe Lauder’s lip products are enriched with apricot kernel, shea butter and murumuru butter, which leave lips soft and creamy smooth. $26.

Burt’s Bees cucumber & sage facial cleansing towelettes: I love that these makeup-remover wipes are inexpensive for the quantity you receive. ($6 for 30 wipes–the average number is 20 to 25). The smell of cucumber is refreshing and relaxing on my skin at the end of the day.

Urban Decay Naked 3 palette: I’ve had this palette for almost a year now and I still love it. The five shades I’ve been using the most this month are BUZZ, TRICK, NOONER, LIAR and MUGSHOT. It’s $54 for this palette, but it’s worth the money considering the quality and longevity.

Elizabeth Arden advanced eye-fix primer: Although this is a pricier item, it’s worth the splurge ($22.50). Eyeshadows, eyeliners and powders stay color-true throughout the day. It also helps control creasing and fading.

Bath & Body Work fragrance mist: Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin is my go-to scent for fall. I had the collection last season and knew it would be a repurchase for this year. If you’re interested in this scent, you can purchase it for 50 percent off ($7)!

What products have you been loving this month? Make sure to let me know in the comments or tweet me @BlissBrunette. Enjoy the rest of your day and I will talk to you on Wednesday.

2. Stretch: Right as you get of of bed, take the time to stretch your muscles and breathe. This will allow your body to wake up in a peaceful way as you prepare for another day.
